  • The Court will never demand payment or request financial information over the phone or email.

  • If you believe you have been contacted by a scammer or are unsure about a jury notice, please contact the Jury Clerk immediately to verify.

Before Your Jury Service Begins

Please contact the Jury Clerk as soon as possible if you have:

  • Work or school conflicts

  • Travel plans

  • Medical or dental appointments

  • Other scheduling concerns

The Court has guidelines to help address these situations.

Length of Jury Service

  • Jury service in Elmore County lasts one month.

  • Most jurors are asked to report 1–2 times during the month.

  • Service may be extended if you are selected for a trial or ordered by a judge.

Courthouse Rules

To ensure safety and efficiency:

Children are not allowed in the courthouse during jury service.

Electronic devices are not allowed inside the courthouse.

If you have an emergency that requires bringing a phone, you must check in with the courthouse marshal upon arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

I Just Received My Summons. What Do I Do?

You must complete and return the qualification form within 10 days.

Even if you believe you qualify for an excuse, the form must still be completed and returned.

If you cannot complete the form, someone may complete it for you but must explain why.

I Received a Summons for Someone Who No Longer Lives Here

  • Do not open the envelope.

  • Write “Return to Sender” on the envelope.

  • Place it back in outgoing mail.

How Are Jurors Selected?

Jurors are randomly selected from:

  • Registered voter records

  • Idaho driver’s license records

The qualification form helps determine legal eligibility and fairness for jury service.

What If Jury Duty Causes a Hardship?

Only a judge can excuse someone for hardship, and this must be discussed in court if you are selected for a trial.

Important to know:

  • Jury service lasts one month but does not mean daily courtroom attendance.

  • Most months include 3–5 potential trial dates, and many trials are canceled or settled beforehand.

Active Duty Military

Active duty military personnel are required to serve unless exempt under federal law (10 USC 982 / DOD Directive 5525.08).

If you believe you qualify for exemption:

  • Complete the qualification form

  • Provide written notice from your commander

Non-U.S. Citizens

Non-U.S. citizens are not eligible for jury service.

To be excused:

  • Complete the qualification form

  • Provide a copy of a Green Card, Visa, or Passport

Medical or Disability Concerns

If a medical condition prevents service:

  • Complete the qualification form

  • Provide a signed note from a licensed physician (MD or DO)

Notes from nurse practitioners or physician assistants cannot be accepted under Idaho law.

Non-Residents of Elmore County

If you maintain an Elmore County driver’s license or voter registration, you are still required to respond.

To be excused, provide documentation such as:

  • Updated driver’s license

  • Updated voter registration

  • Military orders

  • Address update with Idaho Transportation Department

Felony Convictions

  • Individuals currently on felony probation, parole, or incarcerated are not eligible.

  • Individuals who have completed sentencing are eligible.

The qualification form must still be completed.

Prior Commitments or Travel

Contact the Jury Clerk immediately after receiving your summons.

Options may include:

  • One written postponement request

  • Temporary excusal with documentation (such as travel itinerary)

Once assigned to a trial, requests must be addressed directly with the judge.

Emergency Situations

Contact the Jury Clerk as soon as possible if an emergency arises.

What Happens If I Do Not Return My Qualification Form?

Failure to respond may result in:

  1. Reminder letter

  2. Sheriff notification

  3. Court appearance order

  4. Possible penalties including:

    • Up to $500 fine

    • Up to 5 days in jail

    • Or both

What If I Forget to Check Jury Instructions?

Instructions are available:

  • On the jury information line after 6:00 PM weekdays

  • Anytime during weekends

  • Through the Jury Clerk during business hours

College Students

Students must complete the qualification form and contact the Jury Clerk.

Options may include:

  • Postponement to a future month

  • Address update if no longer residing locally

Truck Drivers or Temporary Out-of-County Workers

Jurors must complete the qualification form and contact the Jury Clerk.

Special accommodations may be possible if communicated early.

Can I Be Called More Than Once During My Service Month?

Yes. Jurors remain on call for the entire month and must continue checking instructions until officially released.
